“Life takes place neither in the past nor in the future.

Life takes place…NOW!”

-Jenny Munford

“Life takes place now” has been my mantra this summer.

Every entrepreneur knows the excitement that comes from planning, strategizing, and thinking about what your business or brand could be—and will be—years or months from now. The customers! The profits! The buzz! The personal satisfaction of looking at something that you built from the ground up!

When your future is bright, it’s tempting to live there. But it’s the work that you do now, the life that you lead now, that will ultimately make the difference. So, how can entrepreneurs remember to keep their feet planted firmly in the present? The short answer: Mindfulness.

In a 2014 article in the Huffington Post, Four Ways Mindfulness Can Make You a More Successful Entrepreneur,” Elise Bialylew, founder of Mind Life Project, wrote:

“Our minds are our most precious resource; they are the source of happiness or depression, creativity or self-destruction, problem-solving or problem-making. It seems strange that we hardly take the time to care for what is our greatest asset.”

Not only can living in the moment improve our health but it also can “help develop and mold us into the individuals we need to become,” said Matt Mayberry in the 2015 Forbes article “Don’t Forget the Importance of Living in the Now.”

“Twenty years from now,” said Mayberry, “once you are where you want to be, you will be looking back thinking what a mistake it was to not be as present as you could have been.”

There are many ways that you can integrate a mindfulness practice into your life—from beginning a full-fledged mindfulness meditation to simply having a drink of water before your morning coffee.

As you choose to live in the N-O-W, be guided by these wise words from the Greek dramatist Sophocles:

“Tomorrow is tomorrow.
Future cares have future cures,
And we must mind today.”
